If you are a regular user of the Compulink BBS you will doubtless be
that we hold the listings from BYTE magazine. BYTE realised a long
time ago that printing pages of code related to an article was bound to
cause a great deal of unnecessary work for a reader who wanted to
experiment. Byte themselves run a Fido bulletin board system in the
USA and Fido was an ideal alternative to their printed listings. It's
almost a year now since we started holding the Byte Listings on the
Compulink BBS and we are delighted to be able to offer you this
service.
We update the Byte area on the BBS monthly each time the latest
listings arrive. We currently hold the Byte listings from mid 1984
when the service started and it now takes up three file areas on the
BBS. If you read Byte Magazine and haven't tried the Byte Listinge
service then you're missing something really special.
When the new BYTEnet Listings disks arrive, there is always a
message from Tony Lockwood (the BYTEnet coordinator). We thought you
might like to read this one.........
Friends, I apologize for the lateness in your recent
shipments. We had a new fellow coordinating BYTEnet
Listings, and I'm afraid it just didn't work out. Your disks
will be arriving in better time from now on. I'd like to
take this opportunity to answer some of the questions that
I'm most frequently asked. Feel free to post my response for
your callers.
Many of your callers have asked for information about
subscribing to BYTE. Here's what I hope you want to know.
Air mail has the advantage of getting BYTE delivered to
your address by the the third week of the month of issue.
Surface delivery, on the other hand, will get BYTE delivered
to your address up to 3 months after the date of publication.
$37 -- surface-mail delivery anywhere in the world
Prepayment is required on overseas orders. Visa, MasterCard,
or checks drawn in U.S. funds on a U.S. bank are accepted
forms of payment. In Europe, air- and surface-mail delivery,
one-subscriptions can be purchased in pounds sterling (46 and
25, respectively) by writing to BYTE Subscriptions,
McGraw-Hill International Publications Ltd., McGraw-Hill
House, Maidenhead, Berkshire SL6 2Ql, England.
Many of you have wondered why BYTE costs so much in your
country. The reason is the strong U.S. dollar and currency
conversion rates
Many have inquired about BIX. If you are thinking of
joining BIX, you must establish an account with your national
packet-switching network. Inquire with that service to find
out how much it will charge you for using its lines to access
Tymnet in the U.S. The international access code for BIX is
310600157878
You will see a prompt that says: "Lexington Data Services
is On Line. BIX login:" Respond with BIX. Your national
packet-switching network will bill you for Tymnet. BYTE will
bill you for the time you spend on BIX. All BIX billing is
figured out by the second in your local time. BIX divides
time into two parts: peak and off peak time. Peak is
defined as 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Off
peak is all other times and weekends and holidays. The peak
hourly usage rate is $12. The off-peak rate is $9 an hour.
Overseas parties are encouraged to telephone (603) 924-7681
to get answers to any question about BIX. The hours that
line is staffed are 8 a.m to 11 p.m., Monday through Friday.
I guess that's about it for the business stuff. I hope I
have answered most of your questions. Finally, I want to
thank all of you for your support. We as a group are now
nearly 30 strong. We represent a wide assortment of
nationalities.
BYTEnet Listings members are in Australia, Canada,
Denmark, England, France, Japan, Hong Kong, Italy, Mala ysia,
Nigeria, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sweden,
Switzerland, The Netherlands, and West Germany. Soon we will
be joined by new friends in Argentina, Austria, and Brazil.
BYTE cannot thank you enough for your support, and we look
forward to the future.
Regards, Tony Lockwood
