This file contains descriptions of every file on the magazine
disk. (In general, these descriptions repeat information from the
magazine articles.) As always, read "How to Use the Disk" and the
corresponding magazine articles for full instructions before
running any programs.

To print this file, enter the following command at the DOS
prompt:

COPY README PRN

Programs on the disk are sometimes compressed and stored as
self-extracting archives. It's easy to identify these files--they
all begin with a hyphen (-) and have an .EXE extension.

It's a simple process to uncompress an archive. If you're a
beginner or you just want to keep things as simple as possible,
follow the instructions under "ALL COMPUTERS," below. If you're a
more advanced user, you can follow the instructions under
"COMPUTERS WITH ONE FLOPPY DISK DRIVE," "COMPUTERS WITH TWO
FLOPPY DISK DRIVES," or "COMPUTERS WITH HARD DISK DRIVES,"
depending on your equipment's configuration.

Just be sure not to try to extract a compressed file onto a
copy of the magazine disk--there probably isn't enough space on
the disk for all the files.

ALL COMPUTERS:
* Copy the compressed file to a newly formatted disk.
* Put that disk into drive A.
* At the A> prompt, type the archive name.

COMPUTERS WITH ONE FLOPPY DISK DRIVE:
* Have the disk to which you want the files extracted ready.
* Put the disk that contains the compressed file into your drive.
* At the A> prompt, type -archive B:, substituting the name of
  the compressed file for -archive.
* Follow the computer's instructions to swap disks.

COMPUTERS WITH TWO FLOPPY DISK DRIVES:
* Put the disk that contains the compressed file into drive A.
* Put into drive B the disk to which you want the files
  extracted.
* At the A> prompt, type -archive B:, substituting the name of
  the compressed file for -archive.

COMPUTERS WITH HARD DISK DRIVES:
* On your hard disk, make a directory for the files by changing
to your hard disk and entering the command MD directory,
substituting your own directory name for directory.
* Put the disk that contains the compressed file into drive A.
* At the A> prompt, type the command -archive C:\directory,
substituting the name of the compressed file for -archive and the
names of your hard disk drive and directory for C and directory.

Program files are sometimes stored on the disk in
directories. You can easily identify directories by typing the
DIR command. In the DIR listing, directories are indicated with a
<DIR> beside each directory name. If the program is in a
directory, simply change to the directory with the command CD
directory (substituting the directory name for directory) before
you run the program. To return to the root directory, type CD \.

╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Put aside those archaic label-printing programs that require you
to create a file with names and addresses when all you want to do
is print a couple of labels or several copies of the same label.
"PrtLabel" (Print Label) is an easy-to-use label printer that lets
you specify the number of copies; the height, width, and left margin
of each label; the number of labels across; and more. You can
choose from 56 printer-definition files. Complete online help
will keep you on track.

     -PRTLABL.EXE is a self-extracting archive file. For
information on uncompressing, see the directions at the
beginning of this file. Included in this archive file are
PRTLABEL.EXE (the executable file), PRTLABEL.DOC (the
documentation file), README.CIS (a CompuServe information
file), TEST.LBL (a sample label), and 56 printer-definition
files, all with the .PRN extension. To run the program after
you've uncompressed it, type PRTLABEL at the DOS prompt. For
more information on how to run the program, read the documentation
file. The program works on any IBM PC, XT, AT, or compatible with
256K and DOS 2.1 or higher.

Note:

* The fonts and the double-bar frame are printer-dependent.
* You need to turn NumLock off to use the cursor keys on the
  numeric keypad.

Dress up your PC or compatible with this streamlined,
professional-looking, menu-making utility. With "Menu-Matic" you
can set up macros, choose your own color scheme, use password
protection, and create submenus. For instance, you can create a
GAMES menu option and run all your games from the GAMES submenu
with the press of a key.

This file is a self-extracting archive. For information on
uncompressing, see the directions at the beginning of this file.
In this archive file are MENUINST.EXE (the installation program),
MENUMATC.EXE (the executable file), MENUMATC.DOC (the
documentation file), two batch files (MENU.BAT and DOIT.BAT), and
two data files (MENU.DAT and MENU2.DAT). After you've
uncompressed the file, run the program by typing MENU at the DOS
prompt. The program works on any IBM PC, XT, AT, or compatible
and requires DOS 2.0 or higher and 256K of memory.

Note:

* Add the statement BUFFERS=20 to your CONFIG.SYS file before
  running "Menu-Matic."
* "Menu-Matic" may not work properly on systems that use the
  NEC V30 CPU.

If you have Hercules graphics, get ready to run those CGA
programs you couldn't run before. "CGA" is a color-graphics
emulator that runs lots of CGA software using a Hercules or
compatible graphics card. Programs that write directly to the
screen won't work with CGA, but those programs that use standard
DOS and BIOS calls to the graphics card will work. Some of our
previously published programs that work with CGA installed are
"Burger Blaster" and "PC-Art" (January 1988), "Hover" (March
1988), "States & Capitals" and "Qikserve" (May 1988), "Ancient
Empires" and "Graphics Shape Editor" (July 1988), "Three-
Dimensional Shapes" and "Arcade Baseball" (September 1988), the
BASIC versions of "SolarPix" and "Stars" (November 1988),
"Offroad" and "Pro Football" (January 1989), "Spin 'n' Print"
(March 1989), and "Dr. Sleeptite and the Nightmare Factory" and
"Iskib" (May 1989). Because of differences in graphics cards,
some of these programs may not work on your computer.

The program works on any IBM PC, XT, AT, or compatible with
256K of memory and DOS 2.1 or higher. To run the program, type
CGA at the DOS prompt. Read the documentation file CGA.DOC for an
explanation of the available command line options.

This is an archive file containing three executable files
(NJEVAL.EXE, NJTIDY.EXE, and NJQUOTER.EXE), three documentation
files (NJEVAL.DOC, NJTIDY.DOC, and NJQUOTER.DOC), and one data
file (QUOTES.QUT). See the instructions at the beginning of this
file for uncompressing information. The programs work on any IBM
PC, XT, AT, or compatible with 256K of memory and DOS 2.1 or
higher.

NJEVAL

Put away your hand-held calculator and put the power of your PC
to work with "NJEVAL." This command line calculator was designed
to evaluate mathematical expressions, and it supports standard
mathematical, as well as trigonometric functions. To run the
program after you've uncompressed it, type NJEVAL followed by a
numeric expression at the DOS prompt. For more information, read
the documentation file NJEVAL.DOC.

NJTIDY

Get rid of those unwanted .BAK files, files with zero bytes, or
any other useless files with "NJTIDY." This program searches your
entire hard drive or floppy disk and deletes .BAK files or any
files that you specify. To run the program after you've
uncompressed it, type NJTIDY at the DOS prompt. This will delete
.BAK files and zero-byte files only. To delete files with other
extensions, type NJTIDY followed by an extension. You will be
prompted for every file to see whether you really want to delete
it. If you want to automatically erase the files without the
prompt, use the /N option anywhere after NJTIDY on the command
line. Be careful when using the /N option because you won't have
the chance to change your mind. For more information, read the
documentation file NJTIDY.DOC.

NJQUOTER

Are you tired of the cold, impersonal messages that appear day
after day on your computer screen when you boot up? Create a
more personable computer by running "NJQUOTER" from your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. You'll be greeted with a quotation for the
day every time you boot your computer. Run the program by typing
NJQUOTER after you've uncompressed -NIFTY.EXE. The program looks
for the file QUOTES.QUT in the root directory of your hard drive.
If you don't run the program from drive C, type NJQUOTER
drive:path\QUOTES.QUT. Make sure the QUOTES.QUT file is located
on the drive and path you specify. Read the documentation file
NJQUOTER.DOC for instructions on how to create your own
quotations file.
