This file contains descriptions of every file on the magazine disk.
(In general, these descriptions repeat information from the magazine
articles.) As always, read "How to Use the Disk" and the corresponding
magazine articles for the full instructions before running any of
the programs.

To print this file, enter the following command at the DOS prompt:

COPY README PRN

Programs on the disk are sometimes compressed and stored as
self-extracting archives. It's easy to identify these files: They
all begin with a hyphen (-) and have an EXE extension.

It's a simple process to uncompress an archive. If you're a
beginner, or if you just want to keep things as simple as possible,
follow the instructions under "ALL COMPUTERS," below. If you're a
more advanced user, you can follow the instructions under "COMPUTERS
WITH ONE FLOPPY DISK DRIVE," "COMPUTERS WITH TWO FLOPPY DISK DRIVES,"
or "COMPUTERS WITH HARD DISK DRIVES," depending on your equipment's
configuration.

Just be sure not to try to extract a compressed file onto a copy
of the magazine disk--there probably isn't enough space on the disk for
all the files.

ALL COMPUTERS:
* Copy the compressed file to a newly formatted disk.
* Put that disk into drive A.
* At the A> prompt, type the archive name.

COMPUTERS WITH ONE FLOPPY DISK DRIVE:
* Have a formatted disk ready for your extracted files.
* Put the disk that contains the compressed file into your drive.
* At the A> prompt, type -archive B:, substituting the name of
  the compressed file for -archive.
* Follow the computer's instructions to swap disks.

COMPUTERS WITH TWO FLOPPY DISK DRIVES:
* Put the disk that contains the compressed file into drive A.
* Put a formatted disk where you want the extracted files into drive B.
* At the A> prompt, type -archive B:, substituting the name of the
  compressed file for -archive.

COMPUTERS WITH HARD DISK DRIVES:
* On your hard disk, make a directory for the files by changing
to your hard disk and entering the command MD directory,
substituting your own directory name for directory.
* Put the disk that contains the compressed file into drive A.
* At the A> prompt, type the command -archive C:\directory,
substituting the name of the compressed file for -archive and the
names of your hard disk drive and directory for C and directory.

Program files are sometimes stored on the disk in directories.
You can easily identify directories by typing the DIR command. In the
DIR listing, directories are indicated with a <DIR> beside each
directory name. If the program is in a directory, simply change to the
directory with the command CD directory (substituting the directory name
for directory) before you run the program. To return to the root
directory, type CD \.

╚═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝

This is it! "COMPUTE!'s Menu Operating System" (CMOS) for the PC disk.
On this issue's disk, we're offering a special sneak preview of the menu
that's going to make its official debut on the January 1990 disk. In its
present form, you can use the menu to get a bird's-eye view of the
entire contents of each disk and uncompress all archived files to a hard
drive or floppy disk. With future versions of CMOS, you'll be able to
run programs, read and print the documentation files, as well as
uncompress files from the menu.

To run CMOS, type MENU at the DOS prompt. You can use your Microsoft
or compatible mouse, or use the cursor keys; the PgUp, PgDn, Home, and
End keys work, too. The menu is intuitive and has a short help screen
that's always present. Press the right mouse button or the Esc key to
exit any level of the menu. To exit the program, highlight "Exit to DOS"
and press Enter or press the left mouse button. CMOS runs on any IBM PC,
XT, AT, or compatible with 256K, DOS 2.1 or higher, and any monitor.

Hercules graphics users please note:

CGA emulators aren't compatible with some programs because they break
the rules of normal programming--it's tough trying to fool a Hercules-
graphics system into believing it's a color-graphics system.

CMOS may not work with a CGA emulator installed. Our menu has been
optimized for use with color systems, but don't worry, you can still run
the menu before installing the emulator.

Install the menu and uncompress any archived files. Then exit the
menu, install the emulator, and run any CGA-only programs from the DOS
prompt. You can run any programs that use normal Hercules graphics mode
from the menu.
