AGEMICS FAMILY TREE ( AFT ) MANUAL
AFT is a simple-to-use interactive program for people who are
researching their origins. The system requires no great knowledge of
either Genealogy or Computing. This demo version allows you to enter
10 people's statistics, and view them using the power of AFT.

MAIN MENU
=========
The main menu exhibits four headings: Input/Edit, Display, Print
(NOTE - this is not available on the demo version) and Utilities.
You can move the high-lighted box to any one of these options by
using the Cursor keys. When you are over the option you wish to view,
press the Return key. The specific program routines are now
displayed. You may select these in the same way as the main menu
options by using the Cursor keys and then pressing Return.
Edit Routines
=============
These are broken down into Person Record and Marriage Record
routines. They are similar in operation and on selecting either you
are prompted at the bottom of the screen in the Prompt Box, (Watch
this Box for further help throughout the program execution), for a
number of the record you wish to view, or by pressing RETURN you may
construct a new record. When you have made your selection you can
move within the record using the cursor keys. If you wish to enter
data in a field, move the cursor to that field and simply type in the
data. If data already exists, use the back arrow key to delete it and
then type the new data. Please watch the Prompt Box for help in
entering data. You will see, also, that there are function key
options available to you:-
F1 for help F5 Search F9 for Notes Esc. key to exit
The F1 key will give you some useful tips and advice. The F5 key will
be displayed when you are over the Father or Mother fields, and if
you press this key you will be shown a list of the individuals that
are already in the program. You can select, from this list, the
person you want and his or her details will be entered automatically
in the correct place in the form. The F9 key will take you to a notes
page, and here you can enter data on an individual or a marriage.
There are 255 pages of notes per record available and you may move to
the next page by pressing the F8 key.
YOU ONLY NEED TO ENTER THE NAMES OF THE PEOPLE AND THE
SEX OF THE PERSON FOR A RECORD TO BE INCORPORATED INTO
THE DATABASE.
When you have finished filling in the form press the Esc. key. This
will take you to further prompts at the bottom of the screen where
you can select either 'FORGET EDITS', 'CONTINUE EDITING' or 'SAVE
EDITED DATA'
If you select 'SAVE EDITED DATA' you will be warned, in the 'Prompt
Box' at the bottom of the screen, that the Indexes may be out of
date. See indexing in Utilities.
Display
=======
The Display Routines are Tree Display and Data Display.
Tree Display
============
The Tree display is the powerhouse of the program. From here you can
select any record and by using the cursor keys and the highlighted
box progress around the tree, if you wish to see the full record of
the individual, pressing the F2 function key will display it. Editing
can then take place in the normal way. The person's notes can be
selected in the normal way or they can be 'viewed only' by pressing
the F9 key. In the full version you can also view the marriage record
of an individual in the same way.
Data Display
============
On choosing this routine you are prompted for either the Marriage
data or Person's data displays. For the marriage routines you will be
prompted for a record number of a marriage , hit return to show a
list starting from 1. Or for the person you will be prompted for a
name. The person data display will then be the computers best answer
to the query. If there is no match, the display will show the next
alphabetical character after the your entry. e.g. If the name you are
searching for is 'Bloggs' and there is no-one of that name on the
file then the computer might display 'Coles' as the next .
Note. As you are only allowed 10 entries on the Demo. version the
data display will wrap around, showing some entries twice.
You may then select a new search string or go to the tree display
with the person you have selected as the central record.
The selected record may also be printed our from here giving all
record details and notes. (Not available on this demo version)
Print Options
=============
There are no print options available to you on this demo version, but
if you press the F1 help key whilst over each option you will
discover the characteristics of the printout available on the full
version.
Utilities
=========
The following utilities are available:- Index Updating = To be done
when prompted (see Indexing).
Indexing
========
Indexing is a necessary evil of the program but it has great
benefits. It allows the interaction between fields and thereby makes
the job of the researcher far easier. With this program we have gone
to great lengths to optimize the time it takes to update an index and
so let the user get back to the job of researching as fast as
possible. Hence, if you see the warning 'INDEXES MAY BE OUT OF DATE'
you can ignore it until later, but the data will not be so
interactive and some of it may not be displayed. The longer you leave
it between indexing the worse it will get.
File Extend
-----------
Will allow you to extend the number of people on the database
(locked out on this demo version)
Delete
------
Will delete a record. The search routine is available so you can
choose the record you wish to delete. N.B. Before deleting a record
you should note that other records may have been be using the that
record as a pointer. We have gone to a great deal of trouble to make
this operation automatic but you should look and arrange the data
accordingly.
Colours
-------
Allows you to change the colours to suit your own preference (fixed
on this demo version)
Order Form
----------
(only on this demo version will be replaced by O/S on full version)
O/S
---
Allows you to go back to the operating system and run another program
if you wish. To get back to AFT, type EXIT and press return.
Exit
----
Will finish the program and close all files. You should always leave
the program in this way or you are very likely to lose some data and
possibly even corrupt the whole program. If the Indexes are out of
date the Exit routine will automatically do an Index update, before
finally closing the program down.
