DEVICE: GreaseWeazle 4.1
   DRIVE: TEAC FD-55GFR
   SUITE: FluxEngine (decoder.retries=varied_see_log, drive.revolutions=varied_see_log)
ARCHIVER: Lee Smallbone
ARCHIVED: 2026-04-27 1000 (GMT/UTC)

NOTES:

This disk was originally attempted 11/03/2026 at 1340 UTC.

The disk itself was in very poor condition with obvious mould colonies on the disk. The disk was removed from its jacket and cleaned in a mild solution of a dishwashing soap and warm water with medical non-adherent swabs to remove all mould. The disk was then placed into a clean donor sleeve for a read attempt.

From the first cylinder it began oxide shedding onto the read heads with the tell-tale scraping and squealing from the drive. The read was aborted and the drive thoroughly cleaned, and then the disk examined further. As time was low this day, the disk was returned to its original jacket and noted for further time to be spent on it when time allowed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

27/04/2026 1000 UTC.

Disk removed from retry box and examined. Mould not in evidence so no active sporing. Disk removed from original sleave having been left in a warm position for the last 6 weeks to aid flexibility of the oxide coating, mylar disk and all adherents for the media. Disk cleaned again very gently with mild wiping to remove any loose oxides, placed in a clean donor sleave, and FluxEngine set for single fast-pass (1.5 revolutions, 1 decoder retry).

10 sectors of 720 failed to read. Crucially the boot sector is still good.

A re-pass at 1.2 and 6 retries resulted in a further 3 sectors read.

End read was 99.02% successful (7 meaninfully unreadable from 720).

Disk noted as being STONED! From Wikipedia:

"Stoned is a boot sector computer virus created in 1987. It is one of the first viruses and is thought to have been written by a student in Wellington, New Zealand. By 1989 it had spread widely in New Zealand and Australia, and variants became very common worldwide in the early 1990s. A computer infected with the original version had a one in eight probability that the screen would declare: "Your PC is now Stoned!", a phrase found in infected boot sectors of infected floppy disks and master boot records of infected hard disks, along with the phrase "Legalise Marijuana". Later variants produced a range of other messages."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoned_(computer_virus)

A clean version of the disk will be provided into the archive, as well as the original virus-infected version.

Disk returned to original sleave for archiving.

Despite the magnetic media being scoured off the disk in two very visble cylinders, no actual data was damaged:

A patched copy of the virus-cleaned image is available with the BPB corrected so that the image can be mounted in mTCP NetDrive and other such tooling as the Stoned virus had broken it.
